The prime minister said burning someone to death is a heinous crime
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said those responsible for Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s death will not be spared.
She made the statement while speaking at the Awami League Advisory Council meeting at her Ganabhaban residence on Friday.
The prime minister said: “Burning someone to death is a heinous crime. During the Liberation War, the Pakistan Army killed people in this horrendous manner.
During the election period in 2014, the BNP-Jamaat alliance had killed people in the same say, she added.
“And now, the Feni student has been murdered in the same way. None will be spared; the culprits involved will be punished,” the premier furthered.
The 18 year old student of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa in Feni was set on fire on April 6, right before her Alim examination, on the madrasa’s rooftop, by four masked individuals, reported to be supporters of madrasa principal Md Sirajuddaula.
The victim’s family had previously, on March 27, lodged a sexual harassment case against madrasa principal Md Sirajuddaula, accusing him of attempting to rape the girl in his office.
After battling death for five days with 80% burn injuries on her body, the 18-year-old madrasa student died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9:30pm on April 10, after her condition critically deteriorated, Dr Raihana Awal of DMCH told Dhaka Tribune.
Even though, the prime minister had ordered DMCH authorities to airlift her to Singapore for better treatment, if necessary, doctors at the Singapore General Hospital and DMCH concurred that Nusrat was not in the condition to be airlifted.
Till now, police have arrested 11 people in connection with the murder, including the madrasa’s principal.
